What to pack for the hospital

Congratulations! Now that you have your baby home from the hospital, it’s time to pack up your hospital bag and get prepared to go back to normal life at home with your new bundle of joy.

We all know that having a newborn can be hard work, but we want to make it as easy on you as possible by packing your hospital bag so you’re prepared for everything that comes next!

This list of what to pack for the hospital will help make sure you have everything you need when it comes time to meet little one again!

Safety

There are several supplies you'll want to make sure you have before heading out for your baby's arrival. It can be overwhelming, but try and remember that you don't need everything from day one.

It’s good to keep in mind that if it's not on your list, you probably don't need it. Keep things simple and straightforward so you're less likely to forget anything. The last thing you want is stress at your most important moment in life.

Packing List

When you’re going into labor, you have a million things on your mind. Here’s a handy list of what you should bring when you’re checking into the hospital.

If possible, wear comfortable clothing and shoes (read: No stilettos). If wearing pants is uncomfortable, ask if your OB allows yoga pants or leggings. Your clothes will get drenched in sweat while in labor, so wearing something that will get washed easily is ideal.

Essential Items

To make your stay in a recovery room as comfortable as possible, plan ahead and pack these items.

This way, you’ll be sure not to forget anything and you can rest knowing that you have everything you need. From comfy clothes and toiletries to entertainment and food, these are some of our top picks for what everyone needs in their hospital bag.

Bedtime Essentials

While you’re getting settled in your hospital room, there are a few essentials you’ll want to bring with you.

Though it may not seem like a big deal, bringing your own pillow from home can help ensure your experience is as comfortable as possible; even after just one night in a strange bed, you’ll be thankful for something familiar.

And because different hospitals and birthing centers use different kinds of pillows—or none at all—it’s wise to pack your own.

Feeding Time Essentials

If you’re breastfeeding, bring your breast pump and a comfortable nursing bra.

Since babies tend to get hungry during off-hours (nurses are on duty 24/7), always keep a clean set of clothes and pacifiers in your bag—and don’t forget about burp cloths.

Comfort Items

New moms are often left wondering what they should and shouldn’t bring with them when heading to the hospital.

To make your stay as comfortable as possible, here’s a list of top essentials: comfy clothes, slippers, a robe, lotion or body butter (keep your skin smooth!), chapstick or lip balm, makeup wipes (these will come in handy if you forget any cosmetics), headphones (bring your favorite music so you can tune out other noises), and magazines or books.

Miscellaneous Items

Diapers and wipes (if you plan on using cloth diapers, now is a good time to buy them). Formula and bottles.

The formula can be used up if you’re nursing, so if you plan on breastfeeding, you don’t have to buy any formula at all.

Bottles come in handy as backups when your baby is teething or experiencing gas pains; when breastfed babies experience pain like that, they often do not want to nurse. Bottles are also convenient if you need to give your baby medicine while still feeding him breast milk.
